Why This Must Be Read: Rodney is a composer and conductor who comes across the under-valued John Sheppard while checking out a potential hire. Rodney is perfect in this story, and the undercurrents of nearly-averted tragedy and the hints of the depths to the characters really make this story great. John is more clearly drawn than Rodney despite Rodney as narrator, because the author has all of Rodney's crisp intellect focussed on figuring John out - something he fails overall to do, while still getting the most important things right. This is a beautifully shaped and complete story with a fully satisfying finish.
