Why This Must Be Read: When SG-1 are captured on a mission while on a world at war with another, Jack, Teal'c, and Carter are pressed into enforced service to teach the natives their technical and military skills and strategies. In a culture focused solely on its military complex and its needs, Daniel is deemed to have no skills of value and is separated from SG-1, but... Soldiers have needs and Daniel is forced to serve. Sideburns does an excellent job here of world-building and in providing insight into a culture alien to our own, but the focus here on Daniel and the layers she explores in his personality and psychology during and after his ordeal are what holds the reader and the center of the fic. "I'm fine" doesn't cut it after his ordeal, and the author vividly and believably portrays Daniel's denial, acceptance and recovery. Able support is provided to him by Jacob and Janet, and when the rest of SG-1 becomes aware of what happened to him, we're treated to the same subtle, layered portrayal of SG-1's denial, acceptance and recovery as a team and as individuals.
Author's Summary: Part 1 - "SG-1 is taken prisoner and Jack bargains for their eventual release. Only problem is -- Daniel isn't a soldier and thus, not allowed to remain with Jack and the rest of SG-1. Uh-oh, And uhm, Sam learns a few things about herself later on." Part 2 - "The Rescue of Servi1XY-13 begins -- and consequently, the rescue of SG-1."
