Why This Must Be Read:
Its a look at Cameron & Carolyn's first few dates (as the title says). Its what I call a feel-good fic. I go back and re-read it whenever I need a fix of C/C. It also involves the other characters and shows a life outside the confines of the SGC. And Cam & Carolyn bond over being the newbies of the group and fitting in.
“Hey Doc, can I ask you a question?” I didn’t reply it was my way of giving him the freedom to speak whatever was on his mind. He must have assumed as much because seconds later he continued, “Do you ever feel—like an outsider?”
My mind was screaming yes, my heart was sobbing absolutely but as I looked into his eyes, I sensed something more, “Yeah, I do,” I replied simply.
“Glad I’m not the only one—I guess after people have worked together for so long, you begin to realize they don’t see you as just another part of the family…”
“They seemed to see you as a family member last night,” I replied gently as we entered the commissary.
“Don’t get me wrong Carolyn, they respect me, and they’re good people. But I feel like—I don’t know, like I’ll never measure up to Colonel O’Neill.”
“You won’t,” I stated, catching him by surprise, “You’re not Colonel O’Neill, Cam; then again I think I’d be very confused if Jack asked me out to dinner. But you’re not him, you’re Cameron. It’s something we need to accept and if we do, then they will too. I’m never going to be Janet; I may never be as close to them as Janet was.”
“Let’s make a pact,” he said suddenly as though we were young children again. “The newbie’s stick together, no questions asked.”
I grinned, “I like the sound of that,” I replied as I accepted the cup of coffee he now handed to me. My fingers touching his hand, I suddenly felt the shock again and bit my cheek.
