Why This Must Be Read: Cascade offers the reader an old-school "SG-1 on a first contact mission" story, only with new-school SG-1, Mitchell, Daniel, Teal'c, and Sam, and without the overarching elements of the Goa'uld or the Ori interfering. Very much a Daniel focused story, we find him here in full linguist/archaeologist/anthropologist mode but increasingly wearied by the shortcut, fast food-style service he must impose on his skills at the behest of the SGC, and he's looking for a change in his life. Initially struggling with the Pelosian language, when... something suddenly clears away its mysteries and Daniel understands, it might bring him more understanding of himself, as well. Cascade's structure, pace, and flow are beautifully evocative of Daniel's lethargy and awakening, and the use of flashbacks seamless and entrancing in their revelations. Kylie Lee's characterizations here, of all four members of SG-1, and their relationships ring so true within the series' context at this point and within the story's own, and the slow build to Daniel/Cameron believable, romantic, and sexy.
Author's Summary:: "While SG-1 is on the planet Pelos for a first-contact negotiation, Daniel suddenly gains the ability to speak the language."
