Why This Must Be Read:
A temporary solution turns into a habit then slides into need. Rodney's sensual discovery of John's secret provides a tantalizing glimpse into the mind of a man who's always found it difficult to express himself.
Excerpt:
Miko was actually the first to find out. There was that embarrassing incident with him in his sleepwear - t-shirt, boxers, and combat boots, nothing too revealing for someone without a body-writing habit - and after they finally managed to turn off the water to the fountains and get the drainage system online, John squelched his way back to his room with the hope that she would be one of those distracted, forgetful geek types.
She wasn't.
She showed up at his door the next evening in that odd half-hour between 'open for business' and 'don't bug me, asleep'. She was carrying a box.
The box was wooden and delicately painted. When opened, it revealed a full-color palette, three brushes and two bamboo sticks, mixing cups, and a hole where the paper should have been.
John offered to have paper brought on the next Daedalus run. Her eyes went big; her lower lip trembled. He offered to let her decorate the mess. She whimpered soundlessly. Finally, he threw his hands up in the air and peeled off his shirt.
She painted the word for 'dragon'. She painted 'wind', and 'open', and 'fight'. She took his right shoulder and covered it with 'strong'. She took his left and marked it 'hold'. Over his belly she wrote 'home' and 'need'. Along his spine she trailed 'stand on a cliff above the world'.
She told him what each word meant as she wrote it, and after she told him, he could read them. They weren't strangers. They were right.
After she left, he stared at his back in the bathroom mirror, turning this way and that. He could just see the tail of the dragon curling under his shoulder blade. He shivered.
Two weeks later, he went to her.
