Why This Must Be Read: John and Teyla take a roadtrip through the United States making notifications in the mysterious and sophisticated Messengers by shusu aka Liondragon. John and Teyla's friendship dominates this subtle piece as he enjoys showing her Earth despite their seemingly grim duty. It might not be clear just what's happened or why they are going to Atlantis personnel's families until the end. When the answer gut punches you, reread this brief story to glean many more meanings from John and Teyla's conversations. A gorgeous and deceptively simple concept, beautifully realized.
A snippet...
Though John lucked out when Reed claimed Ohio and the tristate area, his brief stint at Scott Air Force Base got him Des Moines through Memphis. He took Teyla along, dutifully buying her bags of spicy pork rinds and settling for buckets of Wal-Mart cotton candy. It didn't cut her displeasure at having nothing to do. The most he allowed was her keeping him awake on the long night drive to Chillicothe. They had to work fast, and even if she heard them crying from the car, he wouldn't let her come along.
They stopped long enough in Kansas City to get his dress blues dry-cleaned and to call Rodney, who was now on his own in Minnesota. (Normally a bad idea, but Rodney maintained it was painless enough if he talked fast.) Despite getting a ticket for parking in a snow lane, he'd still finish before they would. Several expedition members had come out of the U of M or the surrounding smaller colleges. Rodney could check them off all at once. In the meantime he was pleased they had finally accepted Krispy Kremes this far north, though it couldn't match Tim Horton's. John spited him by slurping a Steak 'n Shake freeze over the phone.

Date: 2009-04-01 04:41 am (UTC)I hope I'll be able to share some next month too that are new to you. I try to veer off the beaten path to cast a light onto my usually deserted haunts. Of course, Teyla and John friendship stories have a curiously lonely (but devoted!) readership anyway. Dunno why since I think they're an awesome pair but their fans make up in quality what they lack in quantity.
May our numbers grow! If I've enticed or (managed to pull you against your will) into being a John and Teyla fan, then I am full of glee and quite unrepentant, particularly to have snagged such a talented and high profile author into the movement (all 30 of us). Maybe something will spark one of your awesome stories, featuring the two naturally! I do love Without Sight and Sound but many, many beat me to reccing it.
As I am delirious from lack of sleep, which I suspect is obvious from my crackiness, I'm going to go crash. Thanks for saying something so sweet. (sniffles)

Date: 2009-04-01 09:49 pm (UTC)I also sign up for stuff like the exchanges, ficathons etc which produce smaller works but keep me from pecking away at the longer stories. After the John and Ronon epic will be the team AU that I plan on writing for SGABigbang..see summer's already gone writing wise! :-P
Glad to see you are recing again..is sad no one is doing John. Come on people??? :-P
