Why This Must Be Read: Stories like this are why I love this fandom. I don't think Colonel Reynolds and Dr. Lindsay Novak, two minor characters from Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis respectively*, ever met. Neither probably had more than ten lines or cumulatively more than ten minutes of screen time during the course of either show. Yet the fandom has not only fully developed the characters and filled in all the mising spots believeably but also managed to envision an authentic and throughly charming chemistry and relationship between them.
In Hyperion, poor Reynolds doesn't quite know at first what hit him. Just when he finally recovers from the realization that commanding the Hyperion, the SGC's first science ship, full of incomprehensible and crazy scientists, is actually Jack O'Neill's evil revenge, many years delayed, and not the plum command he had believed, he notices Novak as a woman AND the scientist who keeps saving them. Of course, Reynolds wouldn't have lasted this long if he didn't have a great sense of humor and an ability to think on his feet. He recovers quickly and flusters Novak with a delightfully understated flirtation. This story is too much fun with some hilarious lines. The ship is so subtle that this is practically gen and should charm just about anyone.
*Updated thanks to rdamel who reminded me that Novak appeared in one episode of SG-1, "Prometheus Unbound."
A snippet....
Colonel Jason Reynolds really should have known this was a bad idea from the start. At the time though, being given command of the Hyperion had seemed like the greatest of honors. His very own ship, a stellar crew, and a nice, comfy captain’s chair. After long years of going through the gate and getting shot at, it seemed like a nice change of pace. There had been a lot of back slapping in the days after he heard about his new post, lots of congratulations and good-natured ribbing.
It’s only now, five days into his first deep space mission, that he finally begins to understand the bizarre smile General O’Neill had given him as he relayed the news. Upon reflection, it had been almost a bit…evil.
Now Jason gets it. Loud and clear, thank you very much, General O’Neill.
(He really should have known a couple pairs of stars would never be enough to cure Jack of his taste for less gentlemanly pursuits, particularly his habit of torturing his subordinates in creative ways. The damn man never did forgive him for that one time SG-3 allegedly got SG-1 sold to a traveling circus. The resulting pictures almost make his current predicament worth it though. Almost.)
SG-3 specialized in search and rescue, not exploration or first contact. He commanded three highly qualified soldiers. The kind who followed orders without question and fit together like a well-oiled machine.
So who in the world would think to put him in command of a research vessel?
A research vessel populated in large part by scientists of various shapes and stripes?
Yeah, you guessed it. The grinning evilly, stars on his shoulders, and obviously has too much free time on his hands Mr. Jack O’Neill.

Date: 2009-03-13 02:23 am (UTC)I'm pretty sure you could infer that they would have met in canon since they were both in the ...*mind goes blank*...S8 ep where Daniel tries to go to Atlantis but is kidnapped by Vala...Prometheus unbound? (But I don't think they were ever on-screen together.) I always thought getting them to hook up would be a good idea.
