Why This Must Be Read: Cameron at the end of his life, alone, far from Earth, yet somehow incredibly at peace, shares his memories with a young girl in whom he recognizes a kindred spirit. Cameron fades away, hovering on the line between ascension and death, so subtly and beautifully that it brought tears to my eyes. This is quite short but it is so effectively and powerfully written that it manages to make an impact with only a few words. Two lines that moved me:
"She always talked about these things as if slightly bewildered, her fingers tracing the grain of the wood on the table as she spoke, traveling distances that represented the distances she'd travel by foot, later.
She wasn't made for staying in one place, and he only hoped that she'd find someone with that same look, someone to keep her company on her journey."
