Why This Must Be Read: The introspective In the Quiet Hours is a snapshot of the team members alone late at night. This story is a standout for how the author takes an SGA fic convention and uses it to subtly explore some of the themes present in season 5 as Stargate Atlantis came to an end: the regrets and consequences the team members experience for all the things they have done and failed to do since they came to Pegasus or joined Atlantis. Rodney, straightforward to the end, is the only team member seemingly unaffected, spending his time alone exactly how he spends his time in public, working away in his lab and gleefully mainlining caffeine. Teyla sits up and seeks comfort in her mental connection with her son as Kanaan obliviously sleeps on. She longs for what could have been and who should have been beside her. As she meditates on how Kanaan fears and hates she and Torren's Wraith DNA, despite sharing it, the cracks and short shelf life of the relationship never seemed clearer. Ronon's artistic soul is revealed as he explores an abandoned Ancient art gallery and is particularly drawn to a sculpture of a dying warrior, in which he ominously finds a resemblance to an expression he has seen too often on John lately. The author uses the emotional shadings that Joe Flanigan added to his performance from the middle of season four on. Negolith2 paints the hardening and ever greater emotional retreat of Sheppard as he begins to become overwhelmed and wearied by his losses, failures, regrets, omissions and what could have been. I can't forget the image of Sheppard finding it more and more difficult to sleep and hiding himself away in his secret Atlantis aerie to find meager comfort in his connection with the city. This was written before "Remnants," but Negolith2 presciently leaves Sheppard in the same disturbed psychological state as did the series. Disquieting, sad and disturbing.
