Why This Must Be Read: With Season 7-era Daniel in command, an expedition of scientists and an SG military team head to a peaceful planet to help its people in exploring a Goa'uld temple and studying its contents. When more SG teams and Bra'tac's Jaffa unexpectedly arrive to participate in war games, and the Goa'ulds Pan and Hermes with more nefarious purposes, things go quickly and devastatingly FUBAR for Daniel and his team. The author takes the time to familiarize the reader with a myriad of original characters, amongst all the regular and recurring Stargate faces, and to set the stage for the events to come in ways that are series-like and that build the momentum into tense, believable, and heartbreaking action. For anyone desiring a "Daniel in command" story, this fic offers an in character portrait of Daniel in a position he doesn't want but knows he must take, whose years of experience have brought him to, with views from civilians and military alike on his command. The author masterfully handles the characters and the action, and deals with the fall-out of a mission gone wrong realistically and in ways that will stick with the reader long after the story's done.
Author's Summary: "Inspired by the legend of the Lost Battalion in WWI, Daniel leads a group of scientists on a 'peaceful' exploratory mission that goes tragically wrong."
