Why This Must Be Read: The fabulously hot and inexplicably perfect combo of Cameron Mitchell and Elizabeth Weir, two characters who shared only one scene in SG-1 and none on SGA, really works. My absolute favorite of what is out there is the moving, heartbreaking and yet hopeful at the same time 12-part series Walking Elizabeth Home by the talented hr_musings.
Rather than dying in "First Strike," in this story's AU, Elizabeth was rescued from the Asurans but is deemed too great a security risk to remain and is still recovering from her original pre-nanite injuries. Over the course of the very long journey back to Earth on the Mitchell-commanded Odyssey, Elizabeth grieves for Atlantis and everything that she has lost and tries to heal her emotional and physical wounds. I was completely bowled over by how Cam woos her subtly and devastatingly with his customary charm and humor. He is utterly irresistable and gorgeously written. Do not miss the burning hot and emotionally satisfying coda, Cue the Joshua Radin Song either.
A snippet of fic....
Cameron entered the quiet Mess carrying two mugs of coffee. He set one down in front of the woman seated alone at the table, and settled down in a chair next to her.
“So… work or pleasure?” he asked Elizabeth with a small nod in the direction of the tablet that she was holding. “Either way, I hope you brought a lot to read… three more months,” he sighed, leaning back in his chair.
“Ohh,” he made a sudden, small sound of self-disgusted chagrin. “Oh God, I’m sorry,” he offered the former Atlantean leader his apology, sitting back up in his chair. “I didn’t mean…”
“It’s all right,” Elizabeth assured him quietly.
“Way to go Mitchell; open mouth… insert foot. I’m sorry…”
“No… no really,” she replied quietly, trying to hold back any other emotion from her voice but that of reassurance. “It’s all right.”
Cameron opened his mouth to say something more, thought better of it, and sat back in his chair again. For a moment, he watched the woman in front of him. All he really knew of her had come primarily from the reports that the Atlantis Expedition had sent back once a week until they had had to uproot the city and find a new homeworld for it. There was also the information on her abduction by the Asurans and subsequent rescue by Colonel Sheppard and his team of course; information that he had needed to know for their return trip to Earth. But other than a few moments in passing last year when he had traveled to Atlantis, Cameron realized that he didn’t really know Elizabeth Weir.
Elizabeth took a sip of her coffee and made a small grimace.
“Yeah, we ran out on the way to Atlantis,” Cameron informed her. “That’s some of the store from the City. I’d give you a cup from some of my private stash, but I offered it to Sam. Who’d have thought that she’d take me up on it?” he said with a wry grin.
Elizabeth gave him a small, almost melancholy smile and slid the cup away from herself.
“Thank you anyway,” she said.
Cameron gave her a nod as she turned back to her reading.
After a few moments of silence, Cameron gave another small nod to the tablet in Elizabeth’s hands. “So, what are you reading?”
“Why Humans Have Sex,” she replied, smiling a little at the Colonel’s surprised expression. She enjoyed his slight discomfort for just a moment before smiling a little again. “It’s a study Kate… Doctor Heightmeyer has been conducting on Atlantis.”
“Really?” Cameron asked, his voice still reflecting his initial surprise.
“Doctor Heightmeyer wanted to take advantage of the opportunity of conducting a study on what happens behaviorally in a group, given a situation like the one we had in Atlantis.”
“So she studied sex?”
Elizabeth tried to not laugh at the Colonel’s expression. “It was just one of the studies she asked permission to run,” she explained.
Cameron gave her a look.
“So she asked you?”
“Of course.”
“That must have been some conversation... Hey, Elizabeth, I’d like to ask everyone how their sex life here on Atlantis is, then write it all down so that Wooseley and his cronies can read and discuss it at the next review board.”
