Why This Must Be Read: The Year of The Jubilee is strange and wonderful and heartbreaking. In this AU, Elizabeth doesn't let Sheppard keep Ronon. He makes a home for himself in an abandoned mansion on Sateda and earns food building weaponry and munitions to arm anti-Wraith factions all over Pegasus. The image of Ronon wandering the abandoned Sateda, never hearing the sound of another's or his own voice is very sad. He's almost forgotten the Lanteans when he passes by a slave auction and spots a familiar uniform. He buys the Lantean and once he gets the badly beaten and tortured man cleaned up, he recognizes him as Sheppard. Ronon takes him home to Atlantis and figures that's the end of it but in fact its only the beginning.
A slave mind control device was implanted in Sheppard at the auction that imprinted on Ronon as his master and he won't, can't let himself be separated from him. This is an incredibly Sheppard-whumparrific fic. It's both physical as the device removes his ability to care for himself and causes him to almost beat himself to death to keep from being separated from Ronon, and mental as Sheppard fights against the mind control with every fiber of his being, hating how it makes him act against his will and how weak it makes him feel. The story is GEN only; the author thankfully resists the cliche of making the relationship sexual or romantic and the story is much more surprising, subtle and powerful because of it. Ronon cares for Sheppard as the device makes him progressively sicker and more helpless. The friendship and bond that is created between these two incredibly private and damaged men is delicately and beautifully written as is the Ronon POV. I think she captures his innate decency and the tender heart beneath the scar tissue. Rodney and Teyla also have wonderfully strong and moving characterizations.
vain-glorious is the master of making it hurt oh so good. Whumpers, especially Sheppard whumpers, should read everything in her back list. This story is not easy to read at times. It can be quite painful as her writing is incredibly evocative and you truly feel John (and Ronon's) emotional and physical anguish. That said, please check this story out. It is dark but it is also incredibly hopeful.
