Why This Must Be Read:
It's a Jungle Out There is the first of five short stories in the Monk AU Series. For those not familiar with Monk, it is a show about a brilliant detective/consultant (Adrian Monk) with an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffers from various phobias, including a fear of germs. At the start of the show, Monk had suffered a nervous breakdown and had remained inside his home for the past three years. He hires a nurse to help him get a handle on his phobias so that he can interact with the rest of society once again.
In the Monk AU series, Rodney is cast into the role of Monk and Sheppard into the role of the nurse/assistant. While the starting premise of this series is based on Monk, the rest is solely McKay and Sheppard goodness. There are also cameo appearances by various and sundry characters from the Stargate franchise.
I thoroughly enjoyed this little series, with all the neurotic behaviour, the paranoia, the snark, the sappiness. Some AUs doesn't work because the characters just do not transpose well. That is not strictly the case here. Rodney is very much himself, even when he is toting around another person's neurosis. So, if you ever wonder what would happen to Rodney when he finally snapped, read these (happy) stories. You might get a good chuckle and some awwwws. A neurotic Rodney is a fun Rodney (to the reader, anyway).
