Why This Must Be Read:
It's always frustrating when the powers that be don't provide any backstory for the supporting characters, but the advantage is that we're all free to create our own. I like the idea of Janet doing some work in Africa with the CDC or MSF before joining the Air Force. This story gives us a much younger, less-experienced Janet, out of her depth, and then connects that to her "present" at the SGC. It isn't completely necessary but I do recommend reading the prequel story, Whispered Promises, especially to follow the Sam/Janet thread. "Promises" is rated R.
