Why this must be read: this is my first time reccing here and I wanted to start with my favorite John/Elizabeth story. Set in imaginary season three (the author hadn't specified it) this story places John and Elizabeth in the situation of being held captive, and with their hopes of rescue diminishing, they must come to terms with their mutual feelings and relationship. It's when things change and they are forced to redefine their relationship once again. It is one of the stories that makes no excuses for changing the characters to a point where they can't be changed back. The author writes them both perfectly in character and tells a story you can come back to and find it beautiful as the very first time you read it. Mentioned violence and torture aren't shown in detail and the story deals more with their reactions to captivity and changes in their relationship.

“What?”
“Can I kiss you?”
She sat up and looked at him dumbly, unable to stop her mouth from dropping open in surprise. It wasn’t normal for her to be speechless, but John Sheppard had managed it. Somehow she did manage to form a cohesive thought.
“Why?” she asked incredulously.
John sat up to face her and looked down at his hands, unable and unwilling to hide his embarrassment. It had been hard enough to ask, but there was no going back now. When he finally lifted his head, she was staring at him intently, but he couldn’t read her expression.
“Because I have really wanted to for a very, very long time.”
Elizabeth felt the fluttering in her stomach at his words. She’d never really thought he would come out and ask if he could kiss her. She almost would have preferred his just grabbing her and done it. But she softened when she realized that a part of it was the last six weeks they’d spent together. They’d become so close, and he didn’t want to jeopardize that. After all, they had no idea how long they would be stuck there.
And even though it could lead to something wonderful, she was hesitant. Kissing John Sheppard was something she’d often thought about. She just hadn’t prepared herself for the reality of it happening. And if they did make it out, what would happen?
The whirl of thoughts, the overanalyzing that was so typical of her, vanished when he reached out and took her hand in his.
He wanted to kiss her. It was flattering and scary at the same time. Not too long ago she never would have thought she would be attracted to a career military soldier like John. And a pilot who loved to go fast, no less. All her life the path to romantic companionship had meant doctors, professors, academics, and even politicians and diplomats. She’d never even gone through a bad boy phase or dated a rebel. She realized, though, that she’d missed something—something that maybe never would have happened if she hadn’t met him.
John was her rebel. He made her see things differently, made her consider possibilities she wouldn’t have before. But he didn’t really fit into the typical Air Force pilot mold. He was so much better than that and had become so much more than that to her. Different from all the men she had known, John was more intelligent, considerate, and courageous than all of them combined. And his hand, so familiar and comforting, was gentle against hers.
“But what happens if—when we get back to Atlantis?” she asked quietly. John sighed, choosing his words carefully.
“We might not make it back. Or they could rescue us next week. Elizabeth, I have plenty of regrets in my life. I just don’t want you to be one of them,” he said earnestly.
