Why This Must Be Read:

The same scene told by both Daniel and Jack, in their first real conversation: Daniel’s not getting paid, and he’s been told O’Neill’s ‘the one to see.’ Jack’s prickly and Daniel’s pricklier, and both of them start to reevaluate first impressions, with a few misconceptions and a lot of glorious foreshadowing thrown in to delight the savvy reader.

Excerpt:

“You checked with payroll?”

Jackson nodded. “They said they hadn’t gotten the paperwork from you yet.”

Jack rolled his eyes. “Why doesn’t that surprise me?”

Jackson shrugged and said in an even tone that didn’t quite hide his suddenly mounting frustration, “I don’t know.”

Was he trying to imply something? “I’ll give them a call,” Jack assured him.

Jackson stared at him another couple of seconds, then lowered his gaze and put his hands in his pockets. “Right,” he said, shortly. But Jack got the message: I don’t believe you, but I’m too polite to say anything.

Imperious little shit. “Look, it’ll be taken care of,” Jack said stiffly. “If it makes you feel any better, I didn’t get mine, either.”

“Why would that make me feel any better?” Jackson all but snapped. Then it was like some sort of training kicked in and he looked down, submissively. But Jesus, that didn’t even begin to hide the fire, and Jack found himself… well, kinda sorta maybe impressed.
