It is my honor to rec George Hammond fics this month as a small tribute to Don S. Davis, who breathed vibrant life into the general that carried the SGC for seven years. Thanks, Don.

Why This Must Be Read: Soapbox Solo gives us excellent instropection in a most realistic George voice, as he watches SG-1 unwind from a difficult mission and considers the burden of command - especially when those in his charge don't make it back. You'll enjoy his thoughts on Janet and her place in the SGC, and the moments of triumph and relief that make everything worthwhile. It's fun to see that, despite all the banter, Jack and the others know exactly who's in charge... and, like us, they're very glad he's there.
Plenty of people had tactfully asked when he planned on giving up command. They always looked surprised when he told them that he frankly didn’t think he would.
He’d stick with the SGC until the day he died.
And then they edged out the question: doesn’t it hurt? How can you do it, day after day?
It was a valid question.
But it was moments like this, when they came back and greeted him with a cocky smile or a tired message (“We made it”) that made him stay.
