I'll be recc'ing Jack fic for you this month. And here's timing - along comes a fabulous new fic by Abyssis -
Rec Category: Jack O'Neill
Pairing: None
Category: Jack O'Neill, Samantha Carter, friendship, Jacob Carter
Warning: Spoilers up to and including 10x01, 'Flesh and Blood'
Author on LJ:
abyssinia4077
Author's Website: None - links to fics on LJ are here.
Link: Magnificent Desolation
Why This Must Be Read: This is a beautiful, lyrical, and extremely knowledgeable exploration of a infrequently-seen aspect of Jack, and of Sam: their shared interest in the space programme, and how it has shaped their lives.
It all seems so obvious once you read it - of course Jack would have heard about that, known about that - of course Sam would have been shocked by that, fascinated by that... All those key events that eventually lead to SG-1 and the most unexpected way of exploring the stars.
The writing wastes no words - but it's far from sparse; every word counts, and there's a depth of feeling behind it all that is clear but unspoken, and all the more moving for it. It's utterly lovely, and if you've not read it yet, don't wait.

Uncle Scott handed Jack his cigar, letting him take a couple of puffs until he couldn’t hold back the cough. He’d started hitting the age where they don’t treat him like a kid anymore. But he wasn’t yet old enough to look at the moon and not think that one day that could be him.
By the time Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins landed back on Earth, Jack was home in Minnesota working at the neighborhood ice cream shop. He talked to his pals about the car he was saving up to buy and the girl he wanted to ask to Homecoming. He kept the stars locked inside just for him.
