Why This Must Be Read:
This story is the best 'Atlantis's take on John Sheppard' story I've ever read. It's touching without being cloying, it's respectful without being fawning--it just strikes the most wonderful balance between 'bound by genes' and 'bound by love.' Atlantis cares for John because she's seen what he'll do to protect her, and we get to see it too, through her eyes. More about Atlantis than John, this story still highlights his character in the ways we love him best--self-sacrificing, protective, John.
And then there is the other man, the one that doesn’t try to understand her but just asks her so nicely if she’ll please help him defend herself and his people along with her. The one who doesn’t realize all he is capable of and never asks her to do more than necessary, even when she would gladly do more. She recognized him because of his gene but she responds to him because of his heart.
