I am rating this PG only because I would expect a movie dealing with PTSD to be that rating. No exceptionally bad language or sexual situations make an appearance in this story (altho Cammie's got a bit of a potty mouth).

Rec Category: Daniel Jackson

Category: Daniel Jackson, angst, character study, AU
Warning: character death, angst, twitchy Daniel

Why this must be read: The Mezzanine 'verse is a creation of [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic and [livejournal.com profile] ivorygates, who, contrary to their protestations, should seriously be locked in a room with computers and internet access and as much chocolate as they wish, because when they get an idea, brilliant stories come out of it. The Mezzanine universe is about mini!Jack and a gender bendered Cam (Cammie) Mitchell who was not miraculously healed in her "X-302 Meets Ice Cap" accident, which I tell you only because you will want to read the other stories. But this is a story about Daniel.

When it all became too much for Daniel, he escaped to Atlantis, leaving behind the SGC, Jack, and all of his other problems unresolved. Now Jack is dead. Yes, that is the character death, and I am giving nothing away as it is the premise for Daniel's return to Earth. Imagine, if you will, a man who has spent the last ten years surrounded by no more than a thousand people at any one time; someone who left because the pressure was more than he could bear without cracking into a million tiny shards of himself. This is the Daniel Jackson who has returned to Earth to say goodbye to his friend, to make good on a promise, even if it is too late. It is a remarkable story of the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder on the human psyche. And, altho it is billed as an AU, this is a characterization of Daniel that I can actually picture at some point in the not-so-distant future. Read and feed the authors!!

Oh, that was so beautiful it hurts! I found myself reading very quickly because I could hear Daniel talking to himself and the longer it went and the more he spoke, the faster his words became until they were practically tripping, each over the other.
Good job, you two. And Zats is right, I do want to read the other stories.
