Ok, well here it is. Part 1 of the first of the month post.

First off, I'm a bit bummed that there were no volunteers for this...

Holiday Fic Recs You can still sign up!!!

But then again, it may have been lost in the second thing I want to say.

Feb 3-9 16 Recs
Feb 10-16 20 Recs
Feb 17-23 16 Recs
Feb 24-29 45 Recs

Now, upon closer look there were 18 recs on February 29th! I'm just... that's a lot of people doing very last minute recs. This floods people's flists with entries. It puts a lot of pressure on the volunteers who put recs into memories because those have to be done before the first of the month (because new rec'cers need the memories up-to-date to avoid duplicate recs). I've asked many times, and I really don't want to cap the number of recs done by a rec'cer in one day, but this cannot be a recurring event. Edit: Duplicate recs within the rec category. I have always said that I don't mind duplicate recs, but not within the same Rec Category. That's in the FAQ as well.

PLEASE plan your rec's in advance. DO NOT wait until the last day of the month to do all your recs. There are a lot of days in a month. A lot of them. So please, please spread them out!!!!!!!

Next, I am going to be incommunicado from Wednesday to Sunday. I'll be completely net-less. Therefore, daily running of the comm is going to be done by [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]. You can email her if it is an emergency, but I'm sure everyone will play nice while I'm gone.

Part 2 will be coming when I get back. :) So, happy rec'cing!

I do have a question. There are plenty of fics out there that fall under multiple categories. Wouldn't there be a huge chance of a fic being rec'd multiple chance under different categories because they would be under different memory entries? Or is this just completely unavoidable and really not a big deal?

Okies. I guess you could always do a master list, but I doubt anyone would have the time to go though so many entries.

I mean if you just wanted one big list, it's not that hard to compile now that I think of it. Calendar > View subjects. Since each fic title is in the subject so it's just a matter of cut and paste just cut and paste all entries subject for that month. You would only have to go month by month, which isn't that hard.

Ctrl + F could be used to find out if the fic is on the list easily.

Categorizing it is a different story though, though not entirely necessary. I don't know just throwing it out there.

The fics are all memoried and tagged by a lot of really dedicated volunteers. Why don't you volunteer to take on the work of making a list of these 2000 fics? It'd be a lot nicer than asking them to add to the pile of work they already do. They make this comm organized, and turn it into a valuable fic resource for the rest of us.

Woah. I had no intention of making it harder for them. I'm just throwing ideas of how to make the comm better, and by no means do I have high expectations for these ideas. Just like I said, throwing ideas out.

I know first hand the hard work and dedication to a comm. I also moderate (a lot of comm and sites). And you know what I was planning to volunteer if they decided to take the idea of a master list.

If we had no tags and no memories, a master list would be perfect. Since we do, a master list would be redundant and would grow into a very unwieldy project very fast. In theory, nice idea, but in practice...it's just not worth the effort. It would not be difficult in the sense of ease, but it would be in the sense of time investment and continued monitoring.

Plus, there is the fact a lot of people enjoy repeat recs. Bringing up things people might have previously missed.

I personally enjoy repeat recs. I kinda just threw this idea because *above* you wanted to avoid them.

Always though master list would just be cool for the fandom in general.

within the same category we do try to avoid it. In varying categories it's fine. Again, the tags and the memories are quite sufficient to avoid it. There is no need for a master list. It would be duplicating the work of people who already spend hours every month corralling and organizing the recs into their respective categories. Creating a master list would, in effect, double the amount of time and work for something that would be, in essence, exactly what we already have.

Understandable. I agree that there is no need for one. Although I seem to be pretty adamant, it really was just a wild idea and I was kind of just presenting a case for it. Old habit I guess from all those years of moderating.

As most ideas are better in theory. As great (and I really do mean great) as the comm is I've always felt some thing could be bettered. I don't think making a master list is much of a stretch (I do see there are like 4000 entries to go though). Also going back all the way isn't necessary persay.

I feel like I'm beating a dead horse right now. lol well I guess I can take the opportunity to say how much I appreciate the hard work you guys have given to the fandom. I can't imagine how else to navigate though the massive amounts of fanfics out there.

Dude, you're beating a dead horse because you're asking for a lot of work, no one wants to do it (understandably, IMO), and you don't seem to get how much work you're asking for.. Have you ever gone through thousands of entries? I've gone through dozens, and that's enough of a pain for the comms I mod.

I have. I
do
understand the amount of work. By no means is it a single task one person can do or is expected to do.

Funny you should mention a dead horse because as you can see in my comment, I spoke of it too. And then dropped the subject and moved on.

I'd *love* a master list. As it is, I copy pasted into Excel so I could sort and look and generally geek out over Messing With Data. :-)

If I Ran The Zoo, a master list would include the categories it was recced in. :-)

Honestly, I like that fic can be recced again in other categories. It means that something recced a year ago could get fresh eyes (great for newbies who may have missed it the first time around) and also means that you can get different perspectives on the fics as reccers make a different emphasis for a new category.

[also, since I'm not sure if I've said this before, thank you so much for all the work you do for this community. It saved me a year ago when I poked my head into this new fandom and had no idea how to start wading through 10 years worth of fic and I've had a blast reccing here, once I got my feet wet]

Since I'm relatively new to the fandom (when you look at how long it has been going on) I too enjoy repeat recs that I had missed.

I made sure I had four in my head before I volunteered. :-) With voting ending tonight (Stargate Fan Awards, you've still got an hour or so!), I'm going to be veddy busy... but I've got my minimum recs ready to release into the wild throughout the month. Time permitting, I'll try and slip in another couple, too.

I had the first one ready before my voting access was up.

I confess I still need to babble about the others, but babbling is easy for me. :-)

And, I admit, the awards stuff is forcing me to be, ugh, *organized*!

Okay. I did leave a note about it back in December, but figured I'd best leave another when I saw it still wasn't there. Thanks.
