Why This Must Be Read: This story's an interesting look at what might've happened had Rodney found a way to stay behind in the Pegasus Galaxy after the Ancient's kicked the expedition out (no, I'll let you read and figure out how that happened, because it's quite clever in its simplicity). The pairings aren't ones I usually read, but Stella Wind does a lovely job of sneaking them into the story in a way that doesn't feel forced and yet makes it entirely secondary to the main plot of the story. She's got some interesting ideas here too, speculations about the Ancients, Atlantis, and also does a nice job of tying in a few places that got featured or mentioned in various episodes and shows their potential past what the show did.

It's possibly not the most exciting story ever, but the theories explored here are original and more than made up for that to me. It definitely deserves more love than it seems to have gotten on AO3, so go check it out!

Why This Must Be Read:

Another one that was written for me, this is five ways Teyla and Sora got a happy ending: after Sora flees the Genii, after the expedition don’t uncover the Genii’s secret, after Sora is sent to live with the Athosians after the storm, after Sora is ill in Atlantis, and after the expedition leaves.

Every section is a completely beautiful story on its own, digging into Teyla and Sora, what they mean to each other, what their lives mean in the context of their relationship, and what Pegasus means to them, how it affects their lives and their friendship. My favourite is the third, in which Teyla insists on sending Sora to live with the Athosians after the storm – it’s a lovely look at Teyla’s compassion and understanding, and her roots in Pegasus culture that no-one else in the city has at that moment.

Why This Must Be Read:

This was written for me for 2007’s [livejournal.com profile] sg_rarepairings exchange and I will happily confess to be gleeful and smug when I received it, because someone wrote this awesome fic just for me. And now I get to be gleeful and smug all over again while I rec it. Win-win.

Inflorescence starts with Teyla and her parents attending a naming ceremony on the Genii homeworld, where a very young Teyla suggests Sora as a name for a beautiful baby (did I mention I love stories about other world cultures? Teyla fic tends to have a lot of these). The rest of the story skips through the two of them growing up, until Sora’s coming of age ceremony at the end, full of bits and pieces of their culture, and of Sora and Teyla’s growing relationship.

What I really love about this is the little hints latentfunction weaves in about the Genii as we’ll see them in the show, and the effects of this on Sora, and then the effects of that on Teyla, and on their friendship, the way that Teyla seems to come so close to figuring it out, and then not. Also, she writes a really beautiful Teyla, so caring and compassionate, and a really clear picture of her growing up, even though we only see bits of it.

Why This Must Be Read:

Beautiful language tells a story of yearning and desire, the attraction between fire and earth, sky and ground. The glitter and fantasy of the circus life collides with the hard core of reality and, by the end, they reach a necessary balance together under the big top.

Why This Must Be Read: [livejournal.com profile] sg_rarepairings truly gave rise to a lot of wonderful stories. This story gives us a few wonderful insights into Teyla, but also into what could have happened with Sora. The underlying former romance and friendship shines through in the way the two women interact and makes this story one of my favourites.

Why This Must Be Read: A character piece for both Teyla and Sora as well as a wonderful example of femslash, this fic is just beautifully written. It picks us up after 'The Eye' and we follow Sora through her imprisonment in Atlantis to Teyla bringing her to the Athosians. Sora has to adjust to her new life, to people around her she once knew, but who didn't know the real her. Throughout all this, we get wonderful insights into both the Athosian and the Genii culture.

Why This Story Must Be Read: It's Teyla/Sora which is a pairing that requires time and room to do well IMO. Lilysaid took that room, and wrote a story of marvelous depth. Not only is the Teyla/Sora relationship believable, especially to anyone who ever loved another girl when they were young, but the friendship between Teyla and Ronon has a wonderful solidity about it.

Why This Must Be Read: [livejournal.com profile] lilysaid is a writer of high caliber, but has also done justice to a pairing that deserves a lot more fic.

In “When the War is Over”, the Atlanteans decide to appoint a Genii liaison to work with them in Atlantis. Ladon is reluctant to let it be Sora, but that works against him and she gets the position. Things are going smoothly until Koyla returns to lay claim to Sora. High adventure, lovely writing and great characterization of Teyla and Sora make this a great read.

Why This Must Be Read: This is just a great look at the way Teyla and Sora's histories have intertwined, both before the Atlantis expedition came to Pegasus, and after. Teyla's normal reticence is shown throughout, and in a well-done way that combines with her emotional equilibrium. The parallels between Teyla's experience and Sora's are made, and compared to Earth folklore. One of the things I really like about this story is that the author gives all the characters their due. No one is minimized for the sake of the main character or pairing (always a big thing with me), and everyone plays an appropriate part, never mind whether the center of the story is. This is a good story, as well, with plot that underscores the relationship, instead of just being tacked on.

Why This Must Be Read: Even though this story is from Sora's POV, it's really just as much about Teyla as it is about her. It picks up at the end of "The Eye" and continues through "The Siege," and it gives the reader an interesting glimpse at Teyla through the eyes of someone who's known her for years.
