Why This Must Be Read:
In this pensive, deceptively quiet vignette based on two icons (scroll up to see them), Jack is standing at the window of his office in Washington, pondering his situation and thinking about his team. It's a very nicely crafted study in which every passing detail signifies, and it paints a wistful, slightly achy portrait of Jack somewhere toward the start of S9. About 656 words.
Excerpt:
The window doesn't actually open. It was never meant to. It's made of bullet-proof glass, and sealed tight to the frame of the building. He can look down on his stellar view of the parking lot, sun glaring off the metal hues, heat shimmering from the pavement, but he can't open it and get a breath of fresh air.
He couldn't do that at the SGC either, but it feels different here.
