Why This Must Be Read:
As a viewer who has no vested interest whatsoever in Rodney McKay, this story was particularly refreshing in providing a point of view of Rodney that we seldom see - Teyla's. Kuwdora manages to paint a subtly alluring picture of Teyla and Rodney's friendship, setting the framework for a connection between the two characters if given the chance to grow. They are in Teyla's element, and Rodney allows himself to be led.
Teyla always found Rodney’s pointed questions endearing, if not brusque, depending on current life-and-death situation, and this certainly wasn’t an exception, despite the unmistakable fear shadowing his face throughout the conversation.
“Yes,” she said softly, her index finger tracing the rim of her cup.
“So this…ceremony help you remember him?” Rodney asked.
“Yes. I think of him everyday,” she answered. By now, she understood what Rodney meant when he defined himself as a “man of science”, so she found herself hesitating on further elaboration. “Sometimes—," she stopped herself and shook her head.
“No, no, go on,” Rodney said, maneuvering into Teyla’s line of vision and offering her an encouraging nod.
She sipped, swallowed and cleared her throat. “There are times when visions of my father come to me,” she said, knowing that sharing this piece of herself with Rodney was silly. “Usually during times of great peril.”
“Oh. Does he help you?” Rodney asked, and Teyla couldn’t be sure why his eyes widened upon hearing her admission.
“Not… directly. On occasion he has pointed me in the right direction. Other times,” she said. “He appears to remind me that I am not alone.”
“Really? See, now that’s interesting because last year when I was trapped in that jumper… I saw Samantha Carter. You may have heard me mention her before.” Now it was Rodney’s turn to clear his throat and Teyla could swear Rodney’s chest puffed out a little. “She’s one of my associates back at the SGC.”
Teyla was familiar with the attributes of Sam Carter long before the woman came to the Pegasus Galaxy for a mission. “Yes. Dr. Carter. The ‘3 B’s.’”
Rodney looked confused.
Teyla smiled lightly, “In the company of Colonel Sheppard, you have mentioned the ‘3 B’s of Doctor Carter: blonde, brains, and brea--’”
“Ah, right. Yes, there’s that. She’s not dead, but I saw her down there. So it’s kind of like your father, right?”
“It does sound similar,” Teyla said.
“Of course I had a concussion at the time.”
Teyla gave him a small shrug. “That does not need to serve as an excuse. It is obvious you trust Doctor Carter, as I have trusted and continue to trust the memory of my father.”
