Why This Must Be Read:

An AU fic where Rodney wasn't on the Atlantis expedition. One piece of alien tech later and he finds himself on Atlantis and finding old friends, aliens, a jealous city and most importantly, John. The only thing wrong with this is that it's not long enough. A wonderful look at what could have happened to the Atlantis expedition.

Excerpt:

He blamed Samantha Carter.

She had him assigned here and taken off the Atlantis mission out of jealously, he was sure. She just couldn’t stand to lose her chance with him and now he was paying the price. He even had an ATA gene now, after the notes Dr. Beckett had left behind had been deciphered and approved for gene therapy, to help aid him in his investigation of the objects brought back by the SG teams at Stargate Command—he would have been indispensable on Atlantis.

But they hadn’t heard from Atlantis for two years. After they managed to get their hands on a ZPM but were unable to achieve a lock on the Atlantis gate, General O’Neill had tentatively listed the entire expedition as missing in action, and everyone had begun thinking of them as dead.

Rodney was trying not to think like that. Too many of them were friends, and he didn’t have any to spare. He certainly had none left on Earth.
