Why this must be read: This is a beautiful piece that takes place during The Tao of Rodney when John is teaching Rodney to meditate. It's a lovely moment between them where Rodney's altered state physically takes them to John's happy place and they are able to have a close, interment moment together where they both let go and just allow themselves to be together. It's hot, gentle, and sweet.
Next to him, Rodney stretches, sliding a leg between John's, his head closer to John's ear than his chest. Then they're rolling sideways, ending with John straddling Rodney. Staring down at Rodney's face, everything feels warm, uplifting, right. The only strangeness is the silence between them. John's gaze slides from Rodney's forehead down to his mouth, lingering there, then snapping back up when Rodney's lips curve into an inviting smile. Rodney's staring up in wonder — and John's not cocky enough to think it's all because of him — and then Rodney starts laughing, a confident, victorious laugh. Whatever's just happened, it's another facet of Rodney's boundless new powers.
They roll over again, and again. When they land, John still on top, he's shivering. The temperature's dropping, warm air cooling off after a sunny day. His breath hitches when he looks around. They're lying in a field of tall, flowering stalks, a palette of lemon yellow, fuchsia and red, and surrounded by the sporadic chirr of grasshoppers. Horses nicker in the distance. He smells fresh straw, fields of clover. John's fully convinced that they're in one of the fallow acres behind the paddocks of his childhood home.
