Why This Must Be Read: Lori gives us John Sheppard, unbonded Sentinel, and Rodney McKay, unwilling Guide, in a series of vignettes and longer stories about both the military (hurry up and wait) and Sentinels in that setting, (patience is not always a virtue). Although the series is marked incomplete, each story stands on its own while setting up for the next. I enjoyed it for the insights into Sheppard the officer and Sheppard the Sentinel, as well as how he relates to people, especially Rodney McKay, when he has no other choices.
Most people, if they gave it any thought at all, would say that someplace like McMurdo, population 1100 in summer would be a great place to stash a military sentinel. Smallish tribe to 'defend', relatively constrained area and 'quiet'. Not so much. It was more like being taken away from your family, your home, the climate you were accustomed to and turned upside down and having your pockets rifled through while being forced to say thank you very much for the trouble.
