Why This Must Be Read: My final novel-length rec, and again, this one'll be known to many people. This long, plotty fic starts with the Expedition 'gating back to Earth as the city's under a final attack, but in trying to save everyone, John and Rodney end up stranded, escaping at the last minute in a jumper to a Pegasus address. They're in a long-term relationship and the story's about that in part, but in a quieter way, more like the ups and downs of a marriage than a romance. What I love most about this story is the detail and worldbuilding about how they survive amidst the warring Wraith and Asurans, and the people they gather to them from Pegasus - runners, survivors, the injured and the desperate. In the same way that the Terrans differ from the Ancients by fighting back rather than escaping into ascension, in this fic, John and Rodney stick around and don't abandon the people of the Pegasus Galaxy, and slowly, slowly, they make a difference.

It was night and Sheppard brought the 'jumper down under the canopy of some huge trees, keeping it cloaked.

"Where are we?" Rodney murmured. The silence was almost deafening after the cacophony of a dying Atlantis.

"P5Y-337."

"Oh."

After a few moments, Sheppard said, "What's that?"

Rodney looked down at his hands, which still cradled the control crystals from Atlantis' DHD. "The control crystal. So we can dial Earth."

"Oh." Sheppard paused. "Can't do that without a ZPM, though, right?"

"Maybe we'll find one." Rodney finally turned to look at Sheppard, who looked just about as shell-shocked as Rodney felt. "I should be freaking out. Why am I not freaking out?"

"I don't know. I'm not either."

"Delayed reaction, you think?"

"Maybe."

They were quiet for a long minute before Rodney said, "They probably think we're dead."

"Maybe," Sheppard repeated, in a tone that said 'probably.'

"The SGC won't risk the sending the Daedalus, not with the Asurans and the Wraith basically destroying Pegasus."

"No, it's not worth it. And they wouldn't know where to find us, anyway." After another moment, Sheppard added, "Did you set the self-destruct?"

"Yeah. The Wraith won't get anything out of it."
