Why This Must Be Read: This is well known, but it hasn't previously been reccd here as it used to be locked to AO3. That's changed, however. It's a novel-length AU work, largely from John's POV, initially set at the SGC where John persuades Rodney to join his gate team. The discovery of Atlantis has been delayed and goes very differently in this version of reality, and after his team is captured John is forced to agree to host Lord Yu, a Goa'uld, with Rodney joining him to research Yu's treasure-houses of collected Ancient tech.
Don't be put off by John as a host - Yu's host had been very old and the symbiont far older and in need of sleep, so John gets a lot more time in the 'driver's seat' than most hosts. It's still incredibly difficult for him and although Yu isn't nearly as evil as most Goa'uld, he's ruthless enough, cunning and Machiavellian, and as his host, John's pitted against other Goa'uld, the SGC, and, after they get to Pegasus, the Wraith. Throughout, he and Rodney are devoted to each other but both feel unable to act on their feelings, so it's a long, slow burn before they eventually get together.
The story has masses of plot and the way Litgal imagines events and people unfolding is interesting and gripping - Teyla, in particular, shines. It's an extraordinary tour de force, a great read, and a fascinating depiction of John's journey from slave to system lord.
