Why This Must Be Read: This is body horror, in which, during a mission to a technologically advanced but ethically challenged alien space station, the scientists there non-consensually give some of John's body parts to Rodney after Rodney, who they value as a scientist, has an accident. The further horror is that they classify some individuals as only worth keeping for spare parts, and they put John in that category. Rodney has to hold the alien station at electronic and firearm gunpoint to make them "fix" John. The story is partly about the mission itself and how all this came about, and partly about the aftermath, when John and Rodney are forced to come to terms with what's happened and how it affects their sense of self and their friendship. It's a tough read in places, but really well-written, and gripping.
