Why This Must Be Read: This is a gripping drama and a heartrending story. It largely comes right in the end, but not entirely, and along the way there's a ton of action and plot with horrific things happening to John behind the scenes. He's captured off-world by a duplicitous culture that wants his ATA gene and lies to the team and Woolsey repeatedly, saying he was captured by rebels. Then he comes back, but not for long. While they're still reeling, a battle robot from the planet arrives at the alpha site, and things get very complicated. Eventually, the deception is uncovered and Atlantis sends a strike force, and we find out the truth. Behind and woven through all this is Rodney's UST-filled relationship with John, making the losses and revelations all the more powerful. Painful in places, and gruelling, but marvellous writing and definitely a great read.
