I just stumbled across this very short piece today (I'm sorry to say that I had never read it before, even though it was first published way back in 2004). This rec is a bit of a departure for me, but I couldn't not rec it, because as a character study of Daniel - of what made Daniel who he is - it's pretty darn good, and as broader commentary on the nature of mankind it's pretty darn brilliant. So, I hope you read it.
