Why This Must Be Read: First of all, it's written by Jedi Buttercup, who is probably one of the all-time masters of the art of the crossover (her AO3 account is up to 1000 works, over half of which are tagged as crossovers). The Stargate universe is one of her primary fandoms, most often paired with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

This fic, however, is a cross with the live-action Disney film Sorcerer's Apprentice, which traces the history of Merlin down a rather different path than the one Daniel and the team followed in the later seasons of SG-1 and lands with something of a bang in modern Manhattan. I liked the movie a great deal, Nicholas Cage's inimitable scene-chewing and all...and this story serves as a follower both to the film and to SG-1's history with Merlin and the associated legends. As with virtually all of the author's work, the integration of canons is deft and full of sharp-eyed matching up of details, and though the story as presented is reasonably self-contained, it leaves immense potential for further extrapolation.
