Why This Must Be Read:

I was so relieved when Jack O'Neill showed up in this story so I could rec it in this category.

This is really a Rodney McKay story, about the Rodney who spends his life working to save John Sheppard. Rodney has completed his work, uploaded everything to Atlantis and has now come back to Earth. He realizes that he won't see John again but that there will be an alternate time line where John has a chance to live.

But now that Rodney has done his life's work in this reality, now what? From the pairings, you see that Rodney and Evan end up together but how they get there is gentle, persuasive, and so nicely done.

Jack serves as an enabler to their relationship, with poker nights, lunches, and just understanding what it means to be 'out there' and fighting the good fight.

There's a coda story that puts a perfect cap on the entire story; also worth reading.
