Why This Must Be Read: Author's summary: "SG-1, some unpleasant weather, an alien city fifty-thousand lightyears from home, and a dozen or so uninvited Jaffa. Oh, and (maybe) an apocalypse."

This story is brilliantly constructed, plus is written in a straighforward (almost sparse, yet rich at the same time) descriptive manner that perfectly suits the subject matter. Setting, characters, the Sam pov, story progression -- it's all there and so perfect. What with the who, where, when, and the maybe-why of what's going on unfolding so smoothly through that combination of construction and style, I'm loathe to risk spoiling the reading experience by saying much about the plot and events ... so I won't. This is the best of SG-1, working together off-world under circumstances they'd prefer didn't exist but nevertheless are handling face-on.

Why This Must Be Read: This is an enjoyable long read from 2008 in which Atlantis gets US-Military-ified and both John and Rodney chafe under the stricter rules and regs. The difference between them is John goes with it and Rodney fights back, until Rodney forces John's hand and they have to make a run for it. There are familiar faces and original characters along the way, and at its heart it's an interesting answer to the question "What if Earth pushed Atlantis too hard?".
