Why This Must Be Read: Author's Summary: "SG-1 are in the familiar position of encountering a civilization where technology masquerades as magic. They're in for a surprise when they attempt to find out who is hiding the technology and why."
Set in Season One and magnificently told through Sam Carter's point of view, 'The Gray' is a first-contact drama / adventure story with an impactful ending twist, in which the team meets a technologically interesting, openly friendly and peaceful society, only to encounter more questions than answers as to where their technology comes from and how it is managed. All of SG-1 are beautifully characterised - there's lots of team wonderfulness here - and the world-building is equally as wonderful, with the original characters being both interesting and likeable ... and therein lies the impact of the truth SG-1 discovers. The story deserves to be read unsullied by spoilers or my take on what happens, so I won't say anything more about the plot, other than to admit that I felt just as deeply affected, in the end, as did Sam.
