Why This Must Be Read: This has been recced before but it was over a decade ago so I'm bringing it back. It remains a fantastic pre-canon view of John who is at once part of his communities — military, family — and at the same time utterly disconnected, who loves places others might consider desolate. When we meet John in 'Rising', he likes Antarctica. In this story he loves Afghanistan, and with writing this vivid, I can understand why.
