Since this is a story from SGA Big Bang 2009 there's also artwork to go with it. Therefore, here's also the link to the SGA Big Bang version of the story: http://sgabigbang.talkoncorners.net/?view=fic&id=91
Summary by the author:
Fleeing from a Wraith surprise attack, John, Rodney, Teyla, and Ronon are separated and stranded on a cold, harsh planet without help, supplies, or a Stargate! As they struggle to survive and find each other, the Team discovers a new alien race, and secrets that the Ancients left behind—including a secret about Ascension that neither the Ancients nor the Ori want anyone to know.
Why This Must Be Read:
At almost 49000 words length this story comes close to the range of paperbacks and it's worth reading every word. This is SGA-fanfiction at its best: a plot-driven sci-fi adventure including action and a truly alien non-human culture, alien OCs who are actually "alien people" contrary to two-dimensional cardboard figures and SGA-characters who act and ring just as we know and love them. Plus: a clever and inventive twist regarding ascension.
All too often I get the impression that a story is either plot driven at the cost of character relations/relationships, lacking the personal aspect which is my main reason for reading fanfic, or it is heavy on exploring relations and relationships while lacking a plot apart from that. "Thousandmother" manages to give us both in a well balanced manner: a sci-fi plot and character relations/relationships. Oh, and SG-1 makes a guest appearance as well so we get two teams in one story. ;-)
That springwoof is a splendid storyteller goes without saying.
