Why this must be read:I such a fangirly about Calcitrix's writing, this is no exception. A beautiful telling of Lorne's first months on Atlantis, as he settles in and gets to know Sheppard and his team, most noticeably McKay. Interspersed with wonderful "doodles" of Lorne's interpretation of the people around him as he compares members of the expedition to Star Wars characters.

Show: Stargate Atlantis
Rec Category: Rodney McKay
Characters: Rodney McKay
Pairing: McKay/Dex
Het/Slash/Gen: Slash
Warning/Spoilers: None | "The Return (part 1)"; "McKay & Mrs. Miller"
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] fydyan
Author's Website: None found.
Link: Letters from Milky Way

Why this must be read:
Summary: Rodney writes. Rodney tries to write. (581 words)

"The Return" was a rich inspiration for fic writers — the expedition was abruptly evicted from Pegasus, severed from their friends and allies ... and then almost seven months passed before the second part aired! "Letters" is a brief, sharp exploration of Rodney's mental state during this exile, framed as an attempt to communicate with a lost love. (I don't personally subscribe to the author's theory explaining the final word, but a good case is made for it in the comments and it does suit the story.) Rodney's disorientation and alienation come through clearly, amid his struggle to find the right words, in a style that just works for the subject.

Show: Stargate Atlantis
Rec Category: Gen
Characters: Rodney McKay, Torren John Emmagan, Teyla Emmagan
Het/Slash/Gen: Gen
Warning/Spoilers: None | Set in season five
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon
Author's Website: Skyehawke
Link: Observations on the Ambulatory Habits of Pegasus Infants

Why this must be read:
(1.7k words)

Babysitting fics are usually ... let's say they're often a hard sell for me, but I simply adore this one. Rodney has offered to watch Torren for a couple of hours when Teyla is in a pinch, but he has an ulterior motive. Cate precisely captures the man who spent hours narrating physics knowledge (and "other wisdom") for a prenatal playback (a nontraditional gift, certainly, but undeniably a thoughtful and considered one). Light and silly, poking gently at Rodney's extravagantly misguided efforts without resorting to mockery, this story is just fun.
