Author's Website: playing god in other people's sandboxes
Link: Rebuilding Babel
Why This Must Be Read:
I often need to remind myself, as I'm going through my file of favorite stories and possible recs to pick the next one, that just because a story is popular and has been around for years it doesn't mean it's already on the list of existing Sheppard/McKay recs for this comm. This story (and the author) are a perfect example, and I was hard-pressed to decide which one of
fiercelydreamed's stories to write up this month.
I chose 'Rebuilding Babel' because it's a wonderfully detailed hurt-comfort story that's about more than Rodney's permanent and profound aphasia. Sheppard is a key player throughout, refusing to give up on Rodney and finally locating an Ancient artifact, which provides a method of communication with Sheppard's assistance. Although there's no easy fix waiting around the corner to restore Rodney to his former acerbically verbal self, there is adaption and accommodation that ultimately leads to Rodney saving the city, along with a recognized shift in his relationship with John.
