For my last recs of the month, I bring you a complimentary pair of fics - I couldn't decide which to rec, and I haven't been reccing all that much lately, so I figured, why not both? Thematically, they bookend each other well.

Why this must be read: Rodney falls into a mudpit offworld, which turns out to have unforeseen side effects. At first it's funny, but later, not so much. This story does a good job of presenting an initially silly situation that later turns serious without either making Rodney a laughingstock or overly woobifying him -- it's a difficult line to walk, and the author manages a fine job! There's also satisfying friendship and h/c with an undercurrent of humor that keeps the story from being too melodramatic or heavy.

Why this must be read: This story struck me as a nice bookend to the one I just rec'd. In the last story, Rodney's hyper and can't sleep; this time around, it's John who has that problem. But this is a much more serious story -- John's issue turns out to be devastatingly lethal, and his friends must work around the clock to save him. There's also a nice callback to Shrine, as John's deteriorating condition forces Rodney to confront his own lingering issues from the brain parasite.

This fic was written for mcsmooch and has a fair amount of John and Rodney pining for each other. But it also has Rodney and Ronon drunk in the woods, talking about feelings and being absolutely adorable. A wonderful look at their friendship.
