Why This Must Be Read:

A dark story about the end of the world that's compelling in its starkness. The second person narrative form in this story emphasizes John's disaffection and descent into madness inside an apocalyptic retreat, where he's been left with a big red button to push when it's time. When Rodney arrives in the bunker to find an impossible solution he's almost larger than life, and he drags John back into living in what's left of the world and then beyond.
