Author Summary:When John is severely injured by an unusual weapon, it may be that only a family member can save his life. And that means David Sheppard must come to Atlantis...IF John's friends can convince him to do it.

Why this should be read:
T'Pring has a really good sense of the Atlantis characters and the relationships between them. The dynamic of the team is really great throughout both stories, Especially the John/Jennifer Friendship which is not what I expected but is certainly welcomed by the end of the fic. The author has a really great portrayal of John, he's so very in character. I love John Whumpage as much as the next person but I hate it when he just lies there and takes it. The thing I love about John is his strength of character and his willingness to never give up especially if his team, or Atlantis, is in danger. In this Fic John does just that, even better we see it through the eyes of David Sheppard who is just as strong willed and stubborn as his brother. T'Pring plays off their similarities while giving David his on unique personality, and you come to adore David at the end of the stories.

Why This Must Be Read:
The first thing I did when I finished reading this was jump back over here to the claims post and made sure I signed up to do Humor as soon as possible, because this rocked my socks off. Snakes and worms are confused, and the team realizes that sci-fi sometimes gets it right. Contains references to the master work of Frank Herbert, but no real knowledge of the story is vitally crucial to enjoying the Wonder Twins' delightful banter, Jack's annoyance, and Teal'c's awesomeness. For those of you who are familiar with Frank Herbert's "Dune" (book or movie, doesn't matter) especially, run, do not walk, to this story.

Excerpt:
"The great worms are not parasites," he said, his voice dripping scorn. "They are the masters of the sands! The eaters of the desert! They rule the darkness with fear and terror! They have claws of metal and teeth of crystal!" He waved the knife under Jack's nose. "Do you see the sh'br'kw'trt, evil traveler? It is shaped with a single tooth of a great worm, obtained at great risk by one of our mightiest hunters, and anointed with the holy oils that seal the blade forever!"

Jack tried to picture a worm big enough to have a mouth full of teeth that big and winced.

"And now," the priest shouted, his voice rising to a crescendo of triumph, "I will use the sh'br'kw'trt to cut the throats of the evil invaders and -"

"Ooooh!" Daniel bounced on his heels, his face suddenly alight with excitement. "It is, isn't it? It is!"

Why This Must Be Read:
A great plot about Sam and Janet but it is also about family, duty, Goa’ulds, and SG-1. There is angst, whumping, action/adventure, hurt/comfort, love, sex, and team friendship & support. The story builds slowly as tension develops; the reader is then hooked. There are relationship issues as well as having to deal with the demands of being an SG-1 team member. The characters are well written and reflect an accurate portrayal of their strengths, weaknesses and values.

Excerpt:
Sam sat tensely on the infirmary bed waiting for her mission clearance. She knew after the exchange in the briefing room that Janet would be the one doing the examination. She closed her eyes and willed away the emotion. This was not the time to be questioning her heart, asking herself things that would distract her. In less than thirty minutes she would be embarked on the most dangerous mission she had ever undertaken, with no immediate backup. She needed to be focused.

Why This Must Be Read:

In the first story, lavvyan sets the reader up for heartbreak with a Rodney that has run afoul of Ancient technology and ended up permanently changed for the worst. When you consider how much Rodney's speech defines his character, his inability to communicate via speech hits hard, as does his retreat from Atlantis. Thankfully, in the companion story, taste_is_sweet returns Rodney to a pining John, although he hasn't been magically restored to his former glory.

Both stories are short, but the descriptive passages are eloquently powerful.

Why This Must Be Read:  Nice little fiction that gives us a glimpse of Janet off-world with the SG-1 trying to contain a plague. Some insight into a “first time” with Sam and Janet in less than ideal conditions.


Excerpt:    Our job. Stopping a plague. You know, the usual. Saving the world and all. You’d be surprised how normal it gets. Still gives me a thrill every time I say it, though. Suppose it always will.

Janet’s the one they really need here. To be honest, I’m not sure why we’re still sticking around. I guess if the locals get rowdy, we could come in handy, but if there’s five of them strong enough to even lift a gun, let alone aim and fire, I’ll eat the colonel’s boots. With the mud, that would not be pleasant, nor would what he’d do to me when he noticed.
