This was written for
lgbtfest, possibly my favourite challenge in fandom, and takes off from the end of Company of Thieves, in which Colonel Emerson goes down with his ship. Cam, being a close friend of Emerson’s, goes along to the wake, and ends up taking Daniel with him. All of which is made more awkward by Emerson’s family not being really able to deal all that well with Emerson being gay, and Cam effectively coming out to Daniel in the process.
I love this story for how real it is – no-one’s an evil person, even if they sometimes do things that hurt others, and no-one’s perfect either, even if they’re trying to do the right thing. Everyone in the story is grieving and hurting, and there’s no way to do what will make everyone feel okay about things, and tesserae_ makes it work so well. Especially through Cam’s eyes; she writes his tangled up worry about Emerson, and Emerson’s partner, and his own sexuality and potential future so well that by the end of the story, you feel like *you* need a hug as much as Cam does.
And as if all that's not enough, there's an NC-17 rated sequel Bring The Rain
