Why This Must Be Read: Inside the Defenses is a nifty little character study of both Jack and Daniel, told through Jack's POV in a series of scattershot scenes over the course of the series that faithfully reflect canon and, in so doing, that ground and authenticate her characterizations. There's a motif of addiction, be it to cigarettes, to alcohol, to the Light, or to a person, running through the scenes that seamlessly connects them and that charts Jack's years with the SG program that rings as true to him, as do his parenthetical thoughts that provide inner codas to the outer man. The author beautifully captures Daniel, too, from Jack's perspective, creating a subtle, tangible portrait drawn in the expressions of his face, or the touch of his hand on wood, or in the words and doubts of a man trying to regain his memory.
