Why this should be read:

First a disclaimer, this was the fic written from my prompt for samcarterfic, so it's definitely near and dear to my heart for that reason alone.

But I wouldn't rec it here if I didn't think it was a wonderful story, and it definitely went different and welcome places than what I had expected. Basically the story is a sweet bonding fic, where Sam is getting to know Selmak since the blending with Jacob. There's a nice background with Jolinar's memories of one of the "oldest and wisest symbiotes" amongst the Tok'ra. Plus Selmak's interest in discovering Tau'ri culture is hilarious.

My favorite part though is the beginning scene when Janet is on a mission to find out what's wrong with her friend. So little has been done with this fabulous friendship between two of SG-1's leading ladies, it's great to see them connecting.

Why This Must Be Read: I'm sure most readers here are familiar with paian (and, for those of you who aren't, paian may also be identified as Komos). I would describe her writing style as arresting, as being in the moment - a single scene that encompasses every bit of past, present, and future. The written equivalent of a picture being worth a thousand words. This particular fic is a string of such scenes, such moments, that all add up to a rich portrait.

Here Daniel is... fine. Mostly fine. Somewhat okay. Whatever, he's dealing with it, thank you very much. But dealing with things by blocking them out only works until something chinks it's way through the armor and when that happens, a moments pleasure can let in more pain than it's worth, sending things spiraling dangerously. So you forget about it, ignore it, submerge it deep into your psyche. Well, you can try. Of course, there's an alternative, but that's just wishful thinking, right?

Why This Must Be Read: And now for something completely different... I've been on an AU kick for the last week thanks to surfing the Jack/Daniel tag over at del.icio.us and, wow, are there some scary things out there. This was one of the good finds (obviously).

The set-up is this: Daniel, complete with triple PhDs, is working as a professional psychologist, counseling children and teens dealing with issues of sexual identity. He also happens to be the adopted, only son of Senator Rogers. Besides the sticky politics of sexuality, Daniel (who is gay) is giving a speech at a gay pride rally, which has precipitated a slew of hate mail and threatening letters. Daniel doesn't consider this particularly worrisome, but his father disagrees and bullies him into a bodyguard for the week leading up to and for during the rally. It would have been three weeks leading up to the rally, but the other three bodyguards had found Daniel a bit much to handle. *cough* Enter Jack O'Neill, retired Air Force Colonel, who has been accepting side jobs as security detail.

What hooked me in here was the characterizations. This is Jack with a lot less scars (emotional, mainly) and Daniel... oh dear God. Think Absolute Power with no evil and all wicked. Adopted by the Senator at the age of 10, Daniel has long found his place in the world and is quite comfortable in it as well as in his own skin. Of which, Jack gets to see plenty. *snickers*

Why This Must Be Read: The latest of her "Five Ways..." series, this is a nice and sexy story with a dash of bittersweetness and really just captures their personalities and the nature of their unique relationship without being too overblown. It's an interesting and sensual read.

Why This Must Be Read: While there are probably hundreds of Legacy-based fics out there, Isabeau's Jericho stands out for its excellent stream-of-consciousness POV of Daniel's ordeal with Machello's Goa'uld killer. While there is dialogue and prose in spots, Jericho is mostly the story of Daniel's mind, struggling with sanity – and slipping away.

It's bleak and jerky, fragmentary phrases spinning away in confusion. In fact, it's exactly what you would expect Daniel's brain to experience during those dreadful hours and days that he was locked away in a white padded room. Isabeau gives us a scary glimpse into the horror of Daniel's spiral into madness – and while there's precious little comfort to go with the hurt, Jericho is too good to be missed.

Why This Must Be Read: This is a very intense and well written look into Elizabeth's character. It is one of the few that point blank addresses some of the darkness that must be lurking within our Lizzie, and the cost to her idealism that running Atlantis must be causing. The author takes these lines of poem as inspiration, and I think it says it all: and then you remember, before the blood, red was the color you loved
