I'll start off my Jack/Daniel recs this month with a trio of pre-slash fics -- one a little angsty, two with happier endings.

Why This Must Be Read: A short and beautifully written piece describing Jack and Daniel's relationship approaching the brink. Jack knows that Daniel's friendship gives him something no one else's can, but is too shut down to see all the implications. Daniel wants more, but not badly enough to push. Yet.

Why This Must Be Read: There's actual plot and story here, but mostly it reads as a lyrical meditation on home and friendship and retirement and love. Daniel has to make a decision about his future, and it takes Jack some time and a truly alien encounter to sift through his feelings and decide what he wants. Both the settings and the emotions are beautifully, dreamily described.

Why This Must Be Read: It's Jack's last mission before retiring from the field. The team enjoys their bond the last night around the campfire, with storytelling from Daniel. The fic is a delightful celebration of the team's connections, intelligence and humor, and captures that moment of change to the next phase.

Why This Must Be Read: How often do we see a real team fic, with each member of SG-1 contributing to the success of the mission? In this story, the bad guys are recruited to capture Teal'c, Sam, and Jack for some shadowy buyers with lousy intel. They pick Daniel as the "weakest link" to capture the others; but as the story unfolds, the bad guys discover that teamwork, SG-1 style, still works smoothly even when half the team is being held hostage against the other half's best behavior.

While this story takes place almost entirely on Earth, it's wonderful to have the chance to see the SGC teams at their efficient and talented best. With light humor to bracket the more intense drama, this story, like all of OughtaKnowBetter's fics, is a keeper.

Why This Must Be Read: One of my favourite post-heroes pieces, that made me cry, and is thoroughly believeable in the mother and partner that Janet is portrayed as.
