Why This Must Be Read: "The Light" remains one of my all-time favorite episodes for Stargate, though I couldn't begin to tell you why. I love post-ep stories for it, too, especially ones that use the forced down-time of the withdrawel to explore the character interactions and stresses that have built up to that point in the series. That's not exactly what this is, as this story takes place during the first part of the episode, but it does address how far apart Jack and Daniel have grown and serves as a catalyst for them to mend that. It could read as pre-slash or friendship.

Why This Must Be Read: I actually was going to recc another post-"The Light" story by this author (Buddies), but found that almost all of his/her stories had been removed from the 'net, which is a shame, as she/he is a good author, who writes angst well, as in shown in this piece. The whole premise of this is that Daniel is a non-consensual prisoner of the military/SGC, and he is raped more than once, by more than one person, so if this bothers you, please don't read. On the other hand, it has a fairly happy ending, or as happy as possible within the confines of this universe, and Jack and Daniel are very in character, despite the very different universe they inhabit.

Why This Must Be Read: Daniel Jackson is kidnapped by an alternate reality Jack O'Neill by way of the quantum mirror, who feels the need to possess him. When Daniel is returned to his Jack, he must reconcile what he has learned in the mirror universe, with what he knows and believes about Jack and himself. I like the way the author accentuates the negative traits in the alternate Jack, leaving you to wonder, if our Jack couldn't be like that with the right provocation, despite our not wanting it to be true. Then she shows us how much our Jack cares for and about Daniel, and how that makes him gentler. Also that while people may be driven by similiar desires, there is a beautiful difference between love and desire.

Why This Must Be Read: I know that Biblio is a much recc'ed author, and there is a reason. She consistantly writes good stories, and this is one of the first I read of hers, and I still remember it fondly. In this story, we have Daniel who is largely unaware of his appeal, bewildered by the fact that he is constantly being hit on, and secretly lusting after Jack. Yet, this is a Daniel who also stands up for himself, and what he wants and what he believes. He isn't a child, but a grown man, with a mind of his own and a strong sense of self. He wants Jack, but he won't compromise on what he deserves in order to have him. I love this characterization.

Why This Must Be Read: There is nothing overt that says Sheppard and McKay are a couple, but it is obvious that they care very much about each other. Each time I read this story, the emotional kick of it is undiminished. Rodney is taken prisoner by allies of the Genii, who believe that they are at war and must do anything to survive, no matter the cost to anyone else, and John faces them on their terms to get Rodney back. It is dark and violent, yet on some level, it is all about perspective, and survival.

Why This Must Be Read: It's a tragic ending, but a very emotional ride to get there. This is a new author (to RM/JS fic anyway), but the style of the story is engaging, and pulls you along, with Rodney.

Why This Must Be Read: Five connected ficlets, each dedicated to a different sense, are used to tell the overall story. I like the structure and style of it. It's very well written and each section really reveals something about John.
