Hesitantly, I offer this fic in the Rodney McKay category. Why hesitantly? I hear you ask from computer chairs across the world. Because though this story is told from McKay's POV- it's really about Radek. Now don't let that put you off, because the McKay voice in this thing is fantastic, and you could read the fic just for that, but it really does feature and explore Zelenka's character.
-Shortly, this fic was written for the sga_flashfic Blood Challenge, and tells a great Radek story through McKay's eyes.

WHY READ?: It's short, but good. This is one of the extremely few in-character (as I see them) fics in Atlantis. Maybe I'm just a ficsnob, but I find it extremely rare to read anything that depicts the characters the way I see them in my head and on the show. This story encapsulates Teyla's formality and the interaction between her and John, both functional and friendly, and yet with the moments of tension that stretch between them.

Why This Must Be Read: The angst isn't over the top here, but it's all the more moving because of it. SG-1 is made up of people who have spent their lives dealing with loss and change, but it's painfully obvious in this piece that some have learned to deal better than others. This time, it's Jack who discovers that he isn't quite as capable of rolling with the punches that life throws at him, and it's all the more painful when contrasted with Daniel's ability to pick himself up and move on, seemingly without a backward glance. It's a quiet, intimate portrait of a Jack who can't quite come to grips with the dichotomy between who he thought he was and who he really is; a Sam who doesn't know who to be when the environment that makes her what she is is taken away; and a Daniel who has learned to make his own happiness where he can find it. A poignant and beautiful story.
