WHY READ?: This story runs AU after the episode 'Shades of Grey', when Jack loses his cool in a routine mission. Declared 'unfit for command', Jack vanishes off the face of the planet, and nobody knows what's happened to him. An old, familiar baddie is brought in for this story, Sam goes undercover, and there are a lot of references to the Wizard of Oz. Some lovely moments of humour, heartache, and be warned: this writer doesn't go easy on the whumping.

Summary: In which Rodney and John fail to pay attention.

Why read it: I have to say, this is one of my all-time favourite Sheppard/McKay stories. The wonderful comedy of errors running through the story doesn't stop you from experiencing the characters' POVs, feeling the depth of their emotions. Every time I re-read this story, I feel particularly involved in John's POV and find him to be a hilarious yet moving contrast to Rodney's more, heh, oblivious perspective.

An excerpt:
"Wait, wait a second," John said, sounding totally baffled. "Are you trying to dump me?"

Rodney stopped, annoyed. "Well, I'm sorry if it's a new experience for you!"

John sputtered, "That's not -- we aren't -- I didn't even -- " He still sounded outraged more than anything.

"And it's not that I don't want to!" Rodney said. "It's just -- Look, chances are this was not our last near-death experience, and it's bad enough trying to get past the inevitable panic attacks and hysteria when it's just my near-death experience I'm freaking out over, without having to worry about someone I -- someone I -- really care about."

John's mouth was standing open, and he shut it, then he opened it again and shut it again, and finally said, faintly, " -- really care about?"

Rodney rolled his eyes. "No, I'll just let anyone who comes by my room have me for the price of a bottle of vodka," he said. Then he had an attack of honesty and added, "Well, I mean, probably I would, if they were hot. But that's not the point."

Bwee! Blow-jobs, hurt/comfort, friendship, humour, first times -- what's not to love? Plus, the best Elizabeth reaction to a "coming out" story ever!

Go read "Oblivious".
